THINGS TO CELEBRATE, THINGS TO WORK ON, LES DEUX

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  • Lots of new people want to work with me.  I’ve worked on a new newsletter project and recently wrote my first official press release (for a fellow entrepreneur) and sent it out to media outlets.  I also have people that I’ve been working with since last summer.  This is a great thing.
  • I’ve started taking the leap and putting myself out there.  I’ve attended a number of networking events and stood up and talked about what I’m doing.  I get so nervous, and my voice starts to shake sometimes when I do this, but I have to do it to get to the next step.
  • A temp agency contacted me through my LinkedIn profile, go figure.  I had an interview with them a few weeks ago for temporary and freelance projects.

Plan of Action: Go back through my email list and follow up with everyone who expressed interest but hasn’t gotten back to me yet.  Write out everyone that is currently working with you, and send a “thank you” out to the universe for them wanting to work with me.

THINGS TO WORK ON

  • Nailing down the voice of one particular project

Plan of Action:
  • Review the website until I can speak the language of this company.
  • Look at websites from those in the same field.  Look at the delivery and check for common threads in all of the writing.
  • Reread past similar projects.

This is a challenge, but I'm going to go after it with the right preparation to do this again. I really hope it works.

WHAT IS THE INTERNET OF THINGS?

3/4/2016

Earlier this month, I made a list of topics that I wanted to be sure to write about in my blog posts.  I feel that it’s good to plan in this way so that you don’t forget the things that you want to address.

A lot of these ideas are tech-related because I really find this world quite interesting.  I’d like to learn how to code too, but that’s another blog post.  Maybe I will title it “The Language of Computers”.  I’d just have to figure out if I’d need to write a section on 1s and 0s too.

In any case, today’s post is about the Internet of Things, also referred to as IoT.

I’m learning about what it is since it seems to be the new catch phrase everywhere.  No matter the industry, I feel like this term is really appearing everywhere.  I’ll be posting on social media for someone, and lo and behold, an article about the Internet of Things of a certain field pops up.

So what is it, what is the Internet of Things?  It sounds like something out of a sci-fi film, Internet gone Frankenstein.  Franken-net.  Aarrghhh!

Yes, that was pretty lame, but I really think that it works in an awkward kind of way.

The Internet of Things is when everyday devices are connected to the Internet.  It is the hair dryer that records the number of times you used it that month, leaving the tally in your email inbox.  Or mechanical problems that are reported on an airplane because even engines are connected to the Internet.

One well-known airline has already added planes with various parts connected to the Internet including the engines and landing gear.

This does in fact sound like a brave new world, one that could be considered the natural evolution of things.  First computers, then Internet, then social networking and social media, then smart phones, and then the Internet of Things.

I mean, the Internet can only be localized for so long.  After smart phones, what is next?  Everyday devices, that’s what.

At least this is just my line of reasoning.

Whether it is actually beneficial remains to be seen.  Some say that it would be useful for city planning too and might make for living more sustainably.

I think this is an interesting and cool concept.

Well I don’t really have an opinion formed on this yet, but it does sound like The Future, or actually more like The Near Future.

One thing I suspect is the debate on ethics that could easily arise from discussing this new development.  Who controls what, and to what extent?

Also, outside of ethical concerns, it also makes a person wonder what you do with all of the information that is gathered from these Internet-connected “things”.  What types of data do you acquire, and what do you do with it?

Lots of questions.

So few answers.

Oh, Copernicus.
