Next time you’re out adulting, here are a few things to remember:
*Always bring your business cards. There’s nothing more anticlimactic than telling someone to
check out your site, and you check your purse (or wallet?) and realize that, “OMG, I left my business
cards in my pocketbook in my other bag!” Not that that was me today or anything. Luckily, I texted
my website soon after, but really, bring your cards with you wherever you go. If you invest your
time and money into designing them, use them.
*Make a mistake or two or three and then get up and keep going. Just don’t make the same
mistake twice. And own up to it. Well...
*Wear lotion. It’s nice to shake hands that don't feel like sandpaper. You don’t want someone to
wonder why you didn’t just wear lotion, which is really easy to do.
*Bring mints. There’s no point in elaborating on this one. Mints do look a little more effortless than
gum, I'll say (maybe because you're not chewing anything, just my guess).
*Be yourself, just in a professional way. There’s so many ways that I feel you’re supposed to
conduct business. Some people are aggressive; others are timid. Yet others are laid back, which
I’ve been told is my personality. I think that as long as your work speaks for itself, and you are
consistent in your authenticity, people will respect you. Just do you, boo.
I’ll probably have more “adulting” tips. I don’t feel like defining this one. I saw the word on someone’s Instagram (thanks Krystle) and thought I’d use it too. Now let’s work on a couple of articles. For reelz. (excuse me, Millennial speak).
